Empress Reishi
¶Emperor Go-Uda's Empress was named Reishi (Note: the Rekidai Kōki writes the character 姈 as 姾). She was the eldest daughter of Emperor Go-Fukakusa. Her mother was Tōnijō-in. In the first month of the eighth year of Bun'ei (1271) she became an Imperial Princess (Note: following the Nyoin Shōden). In the eighth month of the eighth year of Kōchō she was installed as Empress (Note: following the Rekidai Kōki).
¶Later, having no child of her own, she became the foster mother of Emperor Go-Nijō (Note: following the Kōin Shōunroku, the Nyoin Shōden, and the entry for the first year of Bunna in the Enta-ryaku). After the emperor (Go-Uda) abdicated, she withdrew to live in the palace of Emperor Go-Fukakusa (Note: following the Masukagami). In the eighth month of the fourth year of Shōō (1291) she was given the title Yūgimon'in (Note: following the Kijo-shō and the Shigō Zakki).
¶In the early years of Einin she had a secret liaison with the Cloistered Emperor Kameyama and moved to live at Madenokōji-dono (Note: compiled with reference to the Masukagami, the Rekidai Kōki, and the Nyoin Shōden). Later she lived at Imabayashi in Saga (Note: following the Masukagami). In the seventh month of the second year of Tokuji (1307) she died (Note: following the entry for the first year of Bunna in the Enta-ryaku). She was thirty-eight years old (Note: following the Rekidai Kōki, the Nyoin-ki, and the Nyoin Shōden).
¶Since the Empress had enjoyed exceptional favor, at her death the emperor's grief and longing knew no end; he at last shaved his head, dismissed the women of the inner palace, and lived for a long time in abstinence and purification. At Imabayashi he built a Hokke-dō, a Lotus hall, and enshrined her remains there, saying, "Whenever I perform Buddhist services, I shall surely visit on her death anniversary." Using locks of the Empress's hair, he embroidered Sanskrit characters with his own hand, and, bowing three times for every character, he copied the Lotus Sutra on the backs of the sheets of her letters, and placed this in the Sesshu-in (Note: following the Masukagami).
Fujiwara-no-Chūshi
¶The Naishi-no-suke, Handmaid, Fujiwara-no-Chūshi was a daughter of Fujiwara-no-Tadatsugu, Sangi, Counsellor (Note: following the Rekidai Kōki, the Kijo-shō, the Nyoin Shōden, and the Kōkyū Ryakuden. That she was Naishi-no-suke follows the Masukagami). She became an adopted daughter of Fujiwara-no-Morotsugu, Naidaijin, Minister of the Center (Note: following the Jinnō Shōtōki).
¶She entered the palace as Naishi-no-suke and was called Chūnagon-no-Suke. She bore Emperor Go-Daigo, Shōkaku Hōshinnō, Sei'en Hōshinnō (Note: following the Kōin Shōunroku), and Tatchimon'in (Note: following the Masukagami and the Nyoin Shōden).
¶Emperor Kameyama summoned her and favored her, and she moved to live at Zenrinji-dono (Note: following the Masukagami). In the seventh month of the sixth year of Einin (1298) she was granted Junior Third Rank (Note: following the Nyoin Shōden and the Sonpi Bunmyaku. The Kōkyū Ryakuden places it in the fifth year of Einin, which is probably a mistake), and in the seventh month of the third year of Shōan (1301) she was made Jusangū, Quasi-Empress (Note: following the Nyoin-ki and the Nyoin Shōden).
¶In the ninth month of the first year of Kagen (1303) she shaved her head and became a nun, with the Buddhist name Rengechi (Note: following the Nyoin Shōden and the Sonpi Bunmyaku). In the fourth month of the second year of Bunpō (1318) she was given the title Dantenmon'in (Note: following the Rekidai Kōki and the Kijo-shō). In the eleventh month of the first year of Gen'ō (1319) she died (Note: following the Kugyō Bunin, the Rekidai Kōki, the Kōdai-ki, and the Masukagami). In the twelfth month she was made Jusangū, Quasi-Empress (Note: following the Rekidai Kōki, the Nyoin Shōden, and the Kōkyū Ryakuden), and was given the title Saikamon'in (Note: following the Ingō Jō Burui-ki quoting the Fujiwara-no-Sanemi-ki, the Kijo-shō, the Nyoin Shōden, and the Kōkyū Ryakuden). In the eighth month of the tenth year of Shōhei (1355) she died. She was eighty-seven years old (Note: following the Enta-ryaku).
Rinshi
¶Rinshi was the eldest daughter of Imperial Prince Munetaka, Nakatsukasa-kyō, Minister of Central Affairs (Note: following the Masukagami. The Kōin Shōunroku and the Sonpi Bunmyaku both make her the youngest daughter).
¶At first she served the Cloistered Emperor Kameyama, but she did not enjoy his favor. Even after the Cloistered Emperor moved to Kameyama-dono, she remained living at Zenrinji-dono. When Minamoto-no-Arifusa came to the palace for night duty, she secretly became intimate with him and bore a child (Note: following the Masukagami). Afterwards the emperor (Go-Uda) also favored her, and she bore Sūmeimon'in (Note: following the Kōin Shōunroku. The Rekidai Kōki makes her the child of Eikamon'in, but here, since the Masukagami says that Eikamon'in had no children and adopted Sūmeimon'in as her daughter, the account of this work is followed).
Zuishi
¶Zuishi was the youngest daughter of Imperial Prince Sōson (Munetaka) (Note: following the Masukagami. The Kōin Shōunroku and the Sonpi Bunmyaku make her the eldest daughter). She became an adopted daughter of Emperor Kameyama (Note: following the Kōkyū Ryakuden).
¶In the first month of the first year of Kengen (1302) she entered the palace (Note: following the Rekidai Kōki), was made Jusangū, Quasi-Empress, on that very day (Note: following the Nyoin Shōden), and was given the title Eikamon'in (Note: following the Rekidai Kōki). She received the emperor's favor but had no children, and the emperor had her raise his grandson Imperial Prince Kuninaga and Imperial Princess Baishi (Note: following the Masukagami).
¶In the sixth month of the first year of Shōchū (1324) the emperor (Go-Uda) died. In the seventh month she shaved her head and became a nun, with the Buddhist name Myōhōchi (Note: following the Rekidai Kōki, the Nyoin-ki, and the Nyoin Shōden). The Ichidai Yōki writes "Shin" as "Kū"). In the fifth month of the third year of Kōkoku (1342) she died. ¶She received the emperor's favor and bore Dōki Hōshinnō (Note: following the Kōin Shōunroku and the Enta-ryaku Keizu. The Sonpi Bunmyaku says she bore Sonjitsu Hōshinnō, but the theories that make Kan'in and Sonjitsu sons of Emperor Fushimi are all mistaken, so they are not adopted) and Imperial Princess Shinshi (Note: the various texts of the Kōin Shōunroku make her a daughter of Emperor Go-Fushimi, but here, on the basis of the Ichidai Yōki, the Enta-ryaku, and other works, she is fixed as a daughter of Emperor Fushimi.
